More Slot Machines For California Tribes

The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, requested to discontinue the increase of licenses for slot machines for State Casinos of Native Americans. A Panel consisting of three judiciaries in Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the governor’s request. They permitted the Slot licensing to progress. The judges also didn’t accept a claim of state attorneys which stated that Slots could incur hassles like traffic congestion and increased chance for crime for tribes.
As stated by Stephen Warren Solomon (attorney representative for Valley View Casino tribal operators) tribes will use the additional slot licenses in a very short period of time. He also stated that there are plans for construction of a hotel combined with a casino. Currently Valley View has less than 500 slot machines. It will soon have 2000slot machines.
During the governors 2003 campaign he told that the tribal leaders would be made to pay the fair share of revenues from gambling raised from reservations casino to assist the state on its revenue crisis. The payments called for by Arnold Schwarzenegger from the tribal casinos were higher than what his predecessor claimed.
The Governor wanted to utilize the request from tribal casinos for higher slot licenses as a negotiating chip for payments to help balance to state coffers. Schwarzenegger wished to delay the licensing process till next year. The delay was not allowed by appeals court. Thus the California Gambling Control Commission should make the availability for licenses immediately.
Considering the economic conditions, particularly in a state inundated with budget issues like California, the increased slot licenses would not prove very productive. The cost for a slot license for the tribe is US$1,250. Taking note of game revenues around the world, a tribal casino expecting to increase its slot machine bank would be in for a huge gamble themselves.
